Dave Grohl, lead singer and guitarist of Foo Fighters, formed the band 8 years ago. Before Foo Fighters and Nirvana, Dave played drums in a band called Scream in Washington D.C. Dave had been playing guitar since he was 10 and writing songs since he was a teen. When he was about 10 or 11 he used to mess around with his own demos at home, playing guitar, drums and singing with a boom box and stereo. He would play each instrument seperately, record it together, add lyrics, and record them as songs. He never thought that his love for music would turn into a career. Eventually he became the drummer for Nirvana. In 1994 after Cobain's death, Grohl decided he had 3 choices: stop playing music, play drums for another band or start wrting his own music. Dave decided that he was young and had nothing to lose, so he went to a recording studio where he completed a 15 song demo in 5 days. The entire album was recorded by Grohl. Record companies took the demos and Capital Records were chosen to release the Foo Fighters first album. Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith from Sunny Day Real Estate and Pat Smear joined Grohl to form Foo Fighters. In 1995, Capital records released Grohl's first self titled album under the name Foo Fighters. The name was taken from a secret WWII force that researched UFO's. By 1996 the album had gone platinum with hits such as "This Is a Call" and "Big Me." In 1997 William Goldsmith left the Foo Fighters and was replaced by Taylor Hawkins. Pat Smear also left the group that year just after they had completed their second album, "The Colour and the Shape." In 1999 the band recorded, "There is Nothing Left to Lose", as a three piece band. Chris Shiflett later joined as guitarist. In 2002 the Foo Fighters released their 4th album, "One By One." |
